How the University of Limerick transformed career development

Located in the South of Ireland, the University of Limerick (UL) is an independent research-led university for 18,000 undergraduate and graduate students. Committed to graduate employability, the Cooperative Education programme is a hallmark of the institution. One of the largest programs in the EU, UL’s Cooperative Education programme places 2,000 students in paid and semi-paid work experiences around the globe each semester and is “committed to equipping students and graduates with skills and competencies they will need to build successful careers.” With a shared focus on student employability, UL turned to Symplicity in 2023 to integrate all of its career readiness operations all under one system to enhance student outcomes.

Why Symplicity CSM?

UL is not shy of adopting modern technologies and have always looked to technology to enhance campus operations. Yet, for its cooperative education programme, UL was feeling the pain points of having multiple systems on its campus without them being all unified. “We’ve always been very good at early adoption of different technology, but they were all on separate systems and we were looking for a product that could unify them all together,” said Gavin Connell, Head of Careers in Cooperative Education and Careers Division. “We wanted there to be one place to go for students and for staff. The opportunities we have within Symplicity CSM since implementation have been exciting to unify our systems.”

UL's decision to adopt the platform was primarily driven by the functionality and capabilities of Symplicity CSM, emphasising its customisability and innovation. UL saw CSM’s continued upgrades to improve career outcomes for institutions and students aligned with its strategic vision. In addition, UL “customer service is paramount” was a deciding factor for UL to adopt CSM, paired with a dedicated client manager to help UL with implementation and expansion.

“We aimed to consolidate our unique systems together underneath one house for varied reasons. One is a pricing perspective, one is a resource issue and the other is customer client relationships. Students are actually coming to a one stop shop with Symplicity CSM.”

The adoption and impact of Symplicity CSM

The real-time data captured within Symplicity CSM has provided invaluable insights for UL. “We are looking to see how data can actually influence why we're doing things, how we do things,” said Connell. “And in a lot of ways CSM takes some of the operationalising of day-to-day administration activities out of our hands. This has freed us up to do much more value-added work.” This is particularly true when it comes to using the events module. Using iPads, students register their attendance by scanning their students IDs and that data is uploaded immediately into Symplicity CSM. With that data, Connell and his staff can track attendance, a student’s career journey from event to opportunity, and more to make informed decisions about future events and student outreach.

UL prides itself on being ahead of the curve when it comes to technology adoption. The same can be said for their adoption of Symplicity CSM with the institution already looking ahead to how it will expand the use of CSM more widely to include using the Pathways module and has started using the CV builder tool.

In addition, UL has seen an increase student engagement with CSM’s custom newsletter module. UL can now send custom, targeted visually appealing newsletters about internships, co-op opportunities, workshops, and general events that the Cooperative Education office is having.

“We're using Symplicity CSM for most things like, appointments, jobs and curated jobs coming in. It's just phenomenal,”

The partnership with Symplicity

Since the start, Symplicity has support UL with standout client support. “The Symplicity support team is never expecting you to arrive with any pre perceived kind of knowledge or experience of working on systems,” said Connell. “They explain everything and are good at helping us with any question we have. We ask a lot of questions and are never told, ‘That’s a silly question.’ The system is helpful, but I think it’s really the wraparound support that is key; support isn’t left in the dust.”

Symplicity CSM has significantly supported Limerick in operationalising day-to-day administration activities by integrating systems, enhancing communication, improving mobility, and providing robust customer service. These aspects have collectively contributed to a more streamlined and efficient operational environment for UL allowing them to focus on more value-added work and providing an engaging and supportive experience for their students.

“This year, we are hoping to make use out of the Symplicity CSM app. We're really excited about that because having that as being part of the enterprise system is phenomenal because it would be an extra charge anywhere else. We are excited to continue to use CSM this year as we know the system can do much more. We’re very keen to get to explore every piece of Symplicity CSM.”
