15 Years of Success: How the University of Newcastle Empowers Students with CareerHub

For 15 years, the University of Newcastle, Australia, has partnered with Symplicity to enhance student employability, streamline career development workflows, and create personalised student experiences. Through CareerHub, the University of Newcastle has transformed career services, supporting tens of thousands of students in building critical skills, securing placements, and preparing for the workforce. This milestone was recently celebrated at the University of Newcastle’s careers team's morning tea to mark the occasion.

“More than just a platform, CareerHub has become central to the University of Newcastle’s student success strategy, adopted not only by the careers team but also by multiple university departments”, says Renee Smith, Curriculum and Careers Manager, Academic Division, The University of Newcastle.

Career Connect Program

One of the key initiatives enabled by CareerHub is Career Connect, a program designed to help students build employability skills throughout their studies. Using an eight-phase approach, students engage in workshops, complete skills surveys, explore career opportunities, track their experiences, and reflect on their progress through motivation dashboards. At the end of their journey, they can earn the Career Connect Award, recognising their achievements and career readiness.

“CareerHub has been instrumental in automating and digitising this journey, ensuring students can seamlessly access resources and take ownership of their career development”, says Smith.

Semester Exchange Program

Beyond career coaching, CareerHub has also helped streamline the University of Newcastle’s Semester Exchange Program, replacing time-consuming administrative workflows with an efficient, digital-first approach. Through CareerHub’s online forms and workflow management, students can now easily submit applications, track approvals, and schedule appointments, significantly reducing paperwork and staff workload. These enhancements have made international student mobility more accessible, improving both student engagement and administrative efficiency.

iLead Plus Program

Another significant implementation at the University of Newcastle is the iLead Plus Program, which focuses on developing leadership and employability skills. With CareerHub’s automation capabilities, the university has been able to simplify participation tracking, manage event registrations, and provide students with a structured way to develop and showcase their leadership experience. By removing manual administrative bottlenecks, CareerHub has allowed the University of Newcastle to scale this program and impact a broader student base.

Personalised Student Experience

The University of Newcastle has also leveraged CareerHub’s student site framework to create a more personalised experience for students. Opportunities are now filtered based on individual year level, course, and interests, making career resources more relevant and engaging. In addition, students benefit from three different types of certificates that help them track and validate their skill development. These enhancements have ensured that every student receives targeted support, improving employability outcomes across the board.

Looking: Expanding Workflows & Enhancing Student Support

The University of Newcastle is continuing to expand its use of CareerHub by introducing student self-triage features, allowing students to independently assess their needs and access relevant career services. The university is also enhancing employer interaction workflows, making it easier for students to engage with potential employers during placement selection. Their future plans include further integration with student support services, ensuring a seamless experience across departments.

With Symplicity CareerHub at its core, the University of Newcastle continues to lead in career readiness, employability, and student success. This 15-year partnership is a testament to the University of Newcastle’s commitment to innovation and its dedication to preparing students for the workforce. Through a student-centric, technology-driven approach, CareerHub is an essential part of the University of Newcastle’s strategy to empower students for the future.
